November 12, 2021 – Sprout – “Little Philippe of Belgium”

VOvember 12th: the prompt “sprout” led me to a 1930s book of stories about children of many nations. Here’s a few paragraphs of “Little Philippe of Belgium” by Madeline Brandeis which echoes the ever-present conflict between tomorrow’s dreams and today’s reality. #VOvember #VOvember2021

VOvember 12th: SciFi again! W00t! Turns out today’s prompt of “fuzzy” is in the title of this opening to a lauded ’60s novel about finding the first extraterrestrial sentient life. Fun. And fuzzy. “Little Fuzzy” by H. Beam Piper #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 10, 2021 – Ghost – “Great Ghost Stories”

VOvember 10th: “ghost” was today’s prompt and, despite Halloween having come and gone, I went right to ghost stories with it. Here’s a bit from a 1918 book, “Great Ghost Stories”. #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 8, 2021 – Extinct – Animation (Dinobabies)

VOvember 8th: “extinct” naturally makes me think of dinosaurs which naturally makes me think of animation with totally made me remember a workshop I had which got me to pull out this wee tiny bit of copy from it to record for today. #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 7, 2021 – Splat – “So, How Does a Chicken Pee?”

VOvember 7th: “splat” was today’s prompt which took me back in time to a 2010 recording I did for a dual-language audiobook called “So, How Does a Chicken Pee?” It was totally fun to do! Here’s a small bit of it. (VOvember cheat to use pre-recorded work, but I’m giving myself a pass.) 🙂 #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 6, 2021 – Connect – “Ophiolatreia” in the style of a mildly eccentric professor’s lecture.

VOvember 6th: “connect” was today’s prompt which led me to voicing a bit of the book Ophiolatreia: An Account of the Rites and Mysteries Connected with the Origin, Rise, and Development of Serpent Worship in Various Parts of the World as if it were — what else — a lecture by a mildly eccentric professor. #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 5, 2021 – Spark – Feb. 1782 Letter from John Hanson to Philip Thomas

VOvember 5th: the prompt “spark” led me of all places to a news-of-the-day letter from 1782 written by my own 7th great grandfather, John Hanson (first president of the Continental Congress), to his friend Capt. Philip Thomas — both very active in the campaign for an independent United States of America. Here’s a bit from the start, middle, and end of the letter. The whole letter is a really interesting update on international war efforts, the struggle for recognition as an independent nation, and news from home (including what seems to be musings on the selling of a slave — definitely uncomfortable to read especially in the context of one’s own [albeit long-ago] family history). #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 4, 2021 – Crispy – 50 Wonderful Ways to use Sour Cream from Appetizers to Desserts

VOvember Day 4: losing the SciFi, keeping the ’50s, and going a bit industrial. 🙂 Here’s the opening of the 1950 “50 Wonderful Ways to use Sour Cream from Appetizers to Desserts; Recipes from the Test Kitchen of the American Dairy Association” in the style (ish) of the time. The voice/approach just came on as I read through the text and so I went with it. #VOvember #VOvember2021

November 3, 2021 – Patch – “Patch”

Today’s VOvember bit is more audiobook (yay!) and more 50s SciFi (yay!). The prompt “patch” led me to a short story by the same name written by William Shedenhelm in the fall 1950 issue of Planet Stories. I love this story genre so much but I promise (fingers crossed behind my back) to not do a whole month of it. #VOvember #VOvember2021
